A Nigerian graduate has sparked a heated debate online after burning his university degree and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate. In a video that went viral, the unidentified young man expressed his deep frustration with the country's challenging job market and his own personal struggles.
According to reports, the graduate spent seven years in university, ultimately graduating with a second-class lower degree, achieving a GPA of 3.4. He expressed ongoing disappointment over narrowly missing the 3.5 GPA required for a second-class upper division. Initially, he had dreams of becoming a singer, but when that path didn't pan out, he turned to the corporate world, hoping for stability.
The breaking point came during a recent job interview. The graduate was reportedly offered a monthly salary of ₦95,000. He lamented that ₦60,000 of this would be consumed by transportation costs alone, leaving him with very little to live on. In a moment of anger and despair, he set fire to his academic certificates, declaring his frustration with the state of the country and his personal circumstances.
The incident has triggered a wave of reactions on social media. Many have expressed sympathy for the graduate's plight, acknowledging the difficulties faced by young graduates in Nigeria's competitive job market. Others, however, have cautioned against such extreme actions, emphasizing the importance of education and perseverance.
